When we were looking at the house before we bought it, we met the police officer assigned to our neighborhood beat. He expressed some concern that maybe we weren't aware of what we were moving into, especially coming from the swank neighborhood we'd been living in. We laughed and told him Adam's laptop was stolen from a house in Georgetown and his car was broken into and the stereo stolen on Massachusetts Ave, so those swank neighborhoods have a few problems of their own.
We aren't naive though - I no longer walk with an iPod so I can be more aware of my surroundings. We don't walk through the alley at night, and we make sure nothing gets left in the car. I signed up for the Police Digest for our area to keep up with crime reports, too. There has only been one truly disturbing crime report (note to self, don't let your children walk around at midnight by themselves!), but for the most part they are terribly entertaining. Like the car grand theft auto - but really the car was loaned to someone's cousin because the owner was sent to jail for two years. When he got out, the cousin didn't want to give the car back, so it was reported stolen. These things make for some great reading.
And so, back to thinking of our old commute. We never got this kind of entertainment on Mass Ave - some guy apparently had a little too much to drink and then banged up an entire city block of cars. Ahhh. Its a beautiful day in the neighborhood. :)
